DemoDan Update

Been chugging along with the development of the game.

Things accomplished:

Can set charges.
Can set charges.

Set charges and destroy them from a safe zone.

Charges now have a set count and have a sprite for exploding.

Charges need to be detonated by a ranged transmitter.

Rooms now have winning conditions and can proceed to next room.

Pretty proud of what I’ve created so far! It’s really starting to feel like the puzzle game I’ve intended to make.

Things to do:
– How charges react to walls (room fail condition)
– Movable rubble to get to locations
– Dialog
– Sound effects

Sprite Animation

Got the sprite animation working as well as the character properly facing the correct dimensions.

Still using the Bomberman sprite. I fear that I will be using this for a while until we start thinking about artwork and character design for DemoDan.

Game Developer Update 2

This is funny but I’ve decided to change the name from Demo Doug to Demo Dan. A minor change for silly reasons, but I thought it would be better to do this earlier, rather than find assets or project references to something that might no longer be meaningful.

Things accomplished:
Borrowing sprites from Bomberman for now
– Simple movement and collision with walls.
– GIT repo setup for some teamwork action.
– Design Doc started and being discussed/worked on with team.

Game Developer Update 1 – Day 1

Last year I was fortunate in being able to carefully choose and accomplish the side projects that I’ve contributed to. I think it’s time to choose the right one for this year. As long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted to make a game. But the more I’ve actually thought about this as a proper adult – now with limited free time – I think the idea of actually shipping a game, that people can play, excites me more. Making improvements, responding to feedback, providing extra content, tracking sales, sending out promos for our product, all very exciting.

A friend and I have already started a company just for this very reason (which I will speak more about later). We loved the idea of actually making a game that our friends and families would enjoy. So without delay, I present you Demolition Doug. DemoDoug for short.

DemoDoug will be a fun puzzle game that lends itself to fans of Bomberman and Boulder Dash. I’ve purposely narrowed the scope to something simpler and doable just so we can ship something at a reasonable time. I will however be making sure that the story and gameplay will be something that I will be very mindful of. I will continue to update as more of the game gets fleshed out. I have binders of notes (not really, just a couple of pages on a notebook for now). This also means that absolutely nothing for the game has been made so far.

I will be using Game Maker to get this game out. Seems to be the best way for us to really execute on the idea of the game rather than learning about how to program it. A big inspiration was Tom Francis’ video series on How to Make A Game With No Experience. And Tom Francis is pretty inspirational to closet game makers in general, glad that he got the ball rolling for us.

First hearing of this game. Instantly, the weapon customizing aspect seems fun, but could get a bit dry over time. Love the 3rd person POV tho.

Looking forward to checking this out.

WoW Experiment Update 3

WoW Experiment
Last night I had an extravagant 2.5 hours of gameplay. I think I was making up for the fact that I won’t be able to play tonight due to Poker with some friends. But I’m glad to say that those 2.5 hours were choc-full of adventure.

Some highlights.

  • Dinged lvl 13.
  • Found out that I need to disenchant things in order to enchant other things. Also found out that it’s a pain in the ass.
  • Got the VoidWalker pet.

All the writing that went behind each quest is very well done. The unraveling of the story behind the Blood Elves is paced very well with your discovery around the land where you start at. Essentially the Blood Elves have been getting the shaft for a long time.
